Paper weight converter: GSM ↔ lb

Paper weight is the number-one source of print spec confusion. Pick the paper category, convert either way.

Conversions use standard approximate divisors (text ÷1.4802, cover ÷2.7078, bond ÷1.4173) and are for guidance only — confirm with your mill or printer’s swatch book.

How it works

GSM is an absolute area weight: one sheet, one square metre, in grams. lb is defined per category from a different base sheet size, which is why “80 lb” means very different things for text, cover and bond paper.

FAQ

Is GSM the same as lb?

No. GSM (g/m²) is one sheet’s weight in grams per square metre. “lb” (pounds) is the weight of a ream, and its meaning depends on the paper category — text, cover or bond — so the same GSM converts to different lb values for each.

Why do text and cover use different divisions?

US “lb” is the weight of 500 sheets at that category’s base size. Text uses a 25×38 in base, cover a 20×26 in base, and bond a 17×22 in base — so the divisor differs.

What GSM should a business card be?

Most business cards are 300–400 GSM (roughly 14–16 pt cover). Everyday cards sit at 250–310 GSM; premium cards use 360–400 GSM.
